Technology and Media Alone Are Not the Answer to Real Human Engagement
At Audience 101, we’re all about bringing humanity back into marketing and business. As we close this month’s theme—community—we’re focusing on one simple truth: Nothing replaces the power of real-life connections.
Digital tools may connect us instantly, but face-to-face interactions build trust, deepen relationships, and create lasting impact.
As we race toward 2025, one truth remains: We can’t connect, learn, or grow entirely through our screens.
This week, I stepped out of the virtual world and into a WIRED event in San Francisco. The experience? A powerful reminder: Sometimes, to think outside the box, you need to step out of it entirely. 🗃️🚶🏼♂️➡️

Artist: Jeff Gillette’s "slumscape" paintings make us reflect on how the world shapes our lives. His work inspired Banksy to transform a derelict space into Dismaland, an amusement park that challenges us to rethink how we interact and engage with one another.

Audience Insights & Future Trends: The power of live events and how they’ll shape brands in the future.
Case Study of the Week: At a tech conference, why was everyone talking about experience?

Audience Insights & Future Trends
The Real ROI of Real-World Connection
Why events and experiences matter now more than ever:
📊 The Numbers Say It All:
The global events industry is projected to hit $326.5B by 2033, with an 11.53% annual growth rate
80% of events will adopt hybrid models by 2025, blending digital reach with in-person impact
85% of customers are more likely to buy after attending a brand’s live event, and 70% say they’re more likely to become repeat customers
Thought: Back in 2022, I wrote that only 40% of us would embrace hybrid or omnichannel experiences post-pandemic. Why has it taken the world two years to catch up?
💡 Takeaway: A live event isn’t just a one-day activity. It’s a dynamic platform that can evolve. At WIRED, they streamed into the event live, pushed live content through Bluesky, wrote editorial pieces, and captured VOD for future use. That event will continue to inspire as the audience creates their own stories - just like I’m doing here.

Case Study: Lessons from WIRED. Why In-Real-Life Still Wins
Why I went (despite every reason not to)
Two guest cancellations, a 5 AM start, and a packed schedule - it would’ve been easy to skip WIRED’s live event. But I showed up, and it was a powerful reminder: There’s nothing quite like the energy of in-person experiences.

Behind the Scenes: Three Quick Wins for Hosting Impactful Events
With over 20 years of marketing and brand experience, here are a few simple tips for your future planning:
Embrace multi-channel formats: Blend digital reach and interaction with in-person intimacy.
Craft stories, not just events: Build a narrative arc that sparks emotional moments and unexpected connections. These stories will fuel your guests’ user-generated content.
Focus on connection: Only 50% of what matters happens on stage. The other half is the conversations and connections in the audience.
💡 Pro Tip: Always write the story of your event before doing anything else, then plan around it.

A Little More Depth: How Gaming Made Digital Feel Like Real Life
At SXSW this year, Lively (our event production arm) tested the power of live engagement by dedicating three days to the theme Staying Human in a Digital World, one of those days focused on gaming. Why gaming? Because it’s the industry that redefined digital experiences.

My friend Artist ChrisRWK created this piece for our event
The Insight:
Partnering with Activision Blizzard Media, we saw how giving gamers the freedom to create their experiences drives unparalleled engagement and emotional resonance. User-generated content (UGC) remains a key tool for connection.
💡 Takeaway:
Meet your audience where they are—physically and digitally. Collaborate with experts to create meaningful moments that truly resonate.

"Walk in each other's shoes. Get out into the world and meet people you disagree with. Reconnect with the physical world. The internet was meant to bring us together, and it's up to us to choose to come together."

Final Reflection
Even in the digital age, don’t underestimate the power of face-to-face interactions. High numbers might look great on paper, but high-impact experiences are what truly build loyalty and trust.
As we close this month’s theme on community, let’s carry this insight forward. Next month, we’ll focus on change; the opportunities it brings and how to embrace it.
