Have a Hug, the Holidays are Coming!

A Newsletter for the Busy and Curious

Thanksgiving is here in the US, and Christmas is just around the corner—only 28 days left! While the holiday season is a time to panic connect and celebrate, it’s also a reminder of how many of us feel isolated and lonely in this hyper-connected digital age.

The question is: Can technology bridge the gap, or is something deeper required?

Artist of the Week: Chris RWK
Chris RWK’s robotic characters reflect on the human condition, subtly critiquing our relationship with technology and societal norms. His work is a poignant reminder that while technology can mimic human connection, it can’t replace the real thing.

This week, we’re sending you a digital hug 🤗 and inviting you to reflect on how we can create meaningful human connections, even when the algorithms try to get in the way.

We’re the most connected we’ve ever been, yet loneliness and depression are at an all-time high. What’s going wrong?

We’re living in the most connected era of human history, yet loneliness and depression are skyrocketing. What gives?

📊 The Numbers Say It All:

  • Loneliness is growing: Over half of Americans (52%) feel lonely, up from 47% in 2019.

  • Workplace impact: Loneliness costs the UK economy £2.5 billion annually, with effects on productivity and retention.

  • Health risks: Feeling isolated can increase the risk of a stroke by 32% and heart disease by 29%—on par with smoking 15 cigarettes daily.

  • Patterns and demographics: Parents with young kids and remote workers feel it the most, while rural areas report lower loneliness than urban centers.

💡 What Does This Mean?
Human connection is critical. Post-pandemic, the rise of live events shows we crave it more than ever. But the solution isn’t just attending events or scrolling endlessly—it’s about how we engage.

Takeaway: This week, go beyond the surface. Skip the likes and leave thoughtful comments. Call someone instead of texting. Or better yet, meet them in person, even if it’s virtually.

Case Study: Bluesky and the Rise of Alternatives

The Quest for Real Connection

Can social media help us feel less alone?

Bluesky, the buzzy new platform, wants to rewrite the rules of connection by cutting ads and algorithms. It’s a refreshing take, but is it a real solution or just another trend?

The Search is On:

People are looking for more honest, human platforms:

  • Threads (Meta): Familiar and easy, but still ad-driven.

  • Mastodon: Values privacy but feels clunky to use.

  • BeReal: Focused on authenticity, but fewer than half of its users are still engaged after a year. At its peak, it had 70 million, and now its user count is around 25 million.

Bluesky stands out for its promise to put users first. But its success depends on solving these big challenges:

Insights:

1️⃣ How Will It Make Money? Without ads, Bluesky needs a new way to stay afloat while staying user-friendly.
2️⃣ Can It Deliver on Decentralization? Bluesky has already attracted over 20 million users, showing that its promise of user control and ad-free interaction resonates. However, true decentralization means enabling others to build on its platform, and right now, Bluesky is still the main driver of its technology. Can it scale this vision while staying true to its values?
3️⃣ Will People Trust It? Custom feeds give users control but could isolate us into bubbles where we only hear voices like our own.
4️⃣ What About Simplicity? Even though 79% of people care about privacy, most stick to platforms like Instagram because they’re familiar and easy.

Final Thought:

Here’s the truth: No app—Bluesky included—can create real connection for us. Platforms can provide the tools, but trust and effort are what build relationships.

A Question for You:

What do you want from social media? Are we really ready to trade convenience for control, or are platforms like Bluesky just temporary escapes from the frustrations of ads and algorithms?

Behind the Scenes: Rekindling Connections

In the past three weeks, I’ve had more genuine conversations—on LinkedIn, email, and even the phone—than I’ve had in months. The shift has been life-changing.

Building two agencies was isolating at times. Despite professional success, I felt disconnected. So I went “old school,” reaching out to former colleagues and mentors directly. The result? A renewed sense of purpose and some of the best conversations of my career.

💡Takeaway: Sometimes, the simplest actions—like a phone call—create the deepest impact.

A Little More Depth: The E.A.S.E. Framework

John Cacioppo, Ph.D., offers a practical method to break the loneliness cycle through the acronym E.A.S.E.:

  1. Extend Yourself: Step out of your comfort zone, whether by volunteering or joining new groups.

  2. Action Plan: Identify social outlets that fit your strengths and time commitments.

  3. Selection: Focus on quality relationships that align with your values.

  4. Expect the Best: Adopt a positive mindset, optimism encourages connection.
